Jenifer trailer now available

Over at the official Masters of Horror web site, the trailer for Dario Argento's instalment, Jenifer, has finally been posted. Jenifer looks... freaky.

  • I must confess, I haven't seen any of Mr. Argento's work, at least, not that I'm aware of. After seeing the trailer, I think I'll get started. As well, this short series seems like one of the best ideas for television I've heard of in a long time. I noticed a couple of my favourite directors on there: Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon, and Ichi the Killer Director Takashi Miike. I definitely have to find a way to see this program.

  • Mr. Gallows:

The trailer for Jenifer gives the impression that this film will be completely different from his usual style. The basic idea of the story, I believe is a Beauty and the Beast-type tale, except with the same person being both Beauty and the Beast. It seems a lot more like a warped fairytale than his usual style, so I wouldn't necessarily use that trailer as any kind of indication that you would enjoy the rest of his work. Of course, there's no harm in checking some of his stuff out. Of all his films, I would guess that the one that comes closest to what Jenifer seems to be about is Phenomena (1985).

  • I suspected so. Jenifer, like most horror I prefer, seems to be more bizarre, manic, and extreme; visceral/borderline cerebral. My impression of Mr.Argento's regular works, and it's only an impression, is that they are more contemplative and strictly cerebral.

I'll be giving Phenomena a look if I like Jenifer.

  • I think that's more or less correct. Argento has really done two types of film: his more logical "giallo" (thriller) films and his supernatural efforts Suspiria and Inferno. Phenomena falls somewhere in between these, since while it does have a thriller narrative, it also deals with concepts like telepathy, and an insane mother who keeps her deformed child locked in a house without mirrors to "protect" him.
