Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 1, Episode 4: Teacher's Pet
Written by David Greenwalt; Directed by Bruce Seth GreenA good episode of Buffy is a joyous experience to behold, but a bad one is like having teeth drilled. This particular episode is one of the latter: an odious little number with a silly plot (giant bug preys on virgin boys) and an infuriatingly by-the-numbers structure. Okay, I know that, with a new show, it's necessary to establish the basic format so people actually know what they're watching, but the first episode did a perfectly good job of that. This, on the other hand, is just tired and generic.
A major problem with the early episodes of Buffy is that the individual "monster of the week" episodes are extremely poorly connected to the main storyline. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for it to be like Season 7 with its "every episode leads on from the previous one and everything is very boring" structure, but some sense of continuity wouldn't go amiss.
Oh yeah, did you know that sex is wrong? They said it on the show, so it must be true. Not that I particularly wanted to see Nicholas Brendon getting it on with a giant bug, but I could have done without that whole "it's sweet that you've decided to wait" thing at the end.
3/10
Next week we have Never Kill a Boy on the First Date, which I recall being a bit of a clunker too.
