Silence of the what?

DVDSource: The DVD Forums

You may remember my earlier posts about a new "Ultimate Edition" of The Silence of the Lambs. Well, further bad news about this release has been revealed. In addition to featuring player-generated location type and having the same normalised colour scheme as the previous MGM release, it seems some clot managed to shave off some of the opening titles.

There is a one pixelation error in the transfer, in the beginning of chapter 8 at the timecode 0:30:20. There are also some missing opening credits. First credits what are shown are:
-Brooke Smith/Diane Baker/Kasi Lemmons.

These credits are missing:
-A Strong Heart/Demme Production/Jodie Foster/Anthony Hopkins/Scott Glenn/"The Silence Of The Lambs"/Ted Levine/Anthony Heald.

Honestly, I ask you! How can you be so stupid? Many people will probably not consider this a huge problem, but personally I think it's a pretty big deal if the film's title is missing (among other things). It just goes to show what a colossal waste of time and money this new release is, whether or not it includes interviews with Jodie Foster and Jonathan Demme.

On a side note, I listened to the commentary from the superior Criterion Collection release of the film while I was working at the library today. Great track - one of the all-time best, even if it does feature FBI chump John Douglas espousing the wonders of the death penalty.

  • Somehow I'm not surprised by the muck up.

I recently watched my shitty bare bones DVD of it twice while listening to an MP3 of the Criterion Collection commentary I got from an anonymous source.I thoroughly enjoyed it, though, like you said the views spewed by John Douglas were overly biased and right wing, and for the most part, irrelevant.

"This is a movie serial killers would cheer at because the serial killer outsmarted the system. Heh... good thing it's not real!"

As well, a few of Jodie Foster's views seemed overly feminist, and read way too much into things, but they at least had solid grounds.

Is there a good place to get a used copy? All which comes to mind is Amazon's new and used section.

  • I'm not sure where the best place to get a used copy is. It's been out of print for several years and the problem with OOP Criterions is that their value skyrockets very quickly. I think I got mine from someone on the DVD Forums back in 2002. I took a look on eBay and the only one that came up was one from Germany for £39. I don't know if you'd want to bother at that price, but I wouldn't.

  • Christ, certainly not. Amazon.ca had it for 75-90, which is about in the same range, but just looked on Amazon.com. Apparently some people have it up for $29.89 USD, for something they say is in "Like New" condition. Let's hope it wasn't used as a chew toy...
