Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 2, Episode 4: Inca Mummy Girl
Written by Matt Kiene & Joe Reinkemeyer; Directed by Ellen S. PressmanWere Matt Kiene & Joe Reinkemeyer, as some people have suggested, the worst writers of Buffy? No, that title would probably go to Drew Z. Greenberg (Seasons 6-7), but it's a pretty close call, and I suspect that the hate for this duo is entirely due to this episode. The only other episode they wrote was The Pack, which I personally thought was pretty good, but this one is just embarrassing. In fact, despite the fact that Season 2 is far better than Season 1 overall, this particular episode is as bad as the worst of the first season. The biggest problem with this episode is its complete lack of subtlety, but the extremely cheap-looking sets, bad guest performances and the hokey plot about, well, an Inca Mummy Girl, don't do it any favours either. Oh, and, with this episode at least, I can see why Baron Scarpia doesn't like Xander - he's absolutely infuriating in it.
I will give it one thing, though - the Willow-centric scenes are fine, mainly because Alyson Hannigan is one of those actors who can rise above bad material (although I don't intend to see Date Movie, so don't quote me on that). Plus, any episode with Willow dressed as an eskimo can't be completely condemned. Oh, and the introduction of a strangely moustachioed, bearded Oz.
3/10
Next time: Reptile Boy. The worst episode of the season if I remember correctly, even worse than Inca Mummy Girl. Thankfully, after it, the upward spiral begins.
