Street Law

DVD
Blue Underground have brought a highly regarded example of the poliziotteschi genre to DVD, with the studio's usual mediocre image quality slightly marring the experience, but the insightful bonus features going some way towards making up for this shortcoming. Highly recommended for veterans of Italian crime cinema, as well as those looking for an antedote to the comparatively more moralistic American variants of the genre, Street Law has lost none of its edge.

I've got down and dirty in the crime-infested streets of 1970s Genoa and reviewed Street Law, the first of three releases from Blue Underground of poliziotteschi helmed by Enzo G. Castellari. This 1974 offering stars the inimitable Franco Nero and includes an interesting commentary and featurette.

  • Yeah great movie, but the one i'm REALLY waiting for is COLT 38 SPECIAL SQUAD on NoShame.I had a great Dutch tape of this 10 years ago and sold it on a couple of years ago, then realised what a mistake i'd made.An absolute classic from the man that brought us 'WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?' and 'SOLANGE'.

  • Set in Genoa? Didn't know that: I remember another couple of poliziotteschi in the same period, but back then my town was quite uncommon as a movie set (while recently it has become more popular).

  • Enzo Castellari talks quite a bit about the Genoa setting in the commentary, and how pleased all the locals were that their city was finally being filmed (since Rome, Florence and Milan tended to get the most attention). He also mentions that many of the background characters are played by real-life mob members!

  • (after a quick search) It looks like the success of Street Law caused Genoa to be used as a set in another 5 poliziotteschi.

I can imagine wich parts of town and people Castellari refers to :)
