Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 2, Episode 11: Ted

DVDWritten by David Greenwalt & Joss Whedon; Directed by Bruce Seth Green

(a.k.a. In Which Buffy Learns That, Even If She Kills A Human Being, They're Probably Actually A Demon Anyway)

This episode is something of a guilty pleasure for me, if only for the hilarity of seeing Benjamin Healy Jr. himself playing a love interest for Joyce who actually turns out to be an evil robot. (You couldn't make it up, could you?) At this point, John Ritter was pretty much the biggest name to appear in the show, and even accounting for the likes of Charles Cyphers and Harris Yulin in later episodes, I'd still consider him the show's highest profile guest star.

The actual plot is a load of self-contained fluff - surprisingly, for one half-penned by Joss Whedon - although it does set up the recurring theme of Buffy's refusal to take human life (exploited with great success in Season 3's Faith storyline). As such, while this episode initially seems pretty inconsequential, it establishes an important issue that the show would continue to exploit as late as Season 6.

Useless trivia: this is Alyson Hannigan's favourite episode.

8/10

Next time: Bad Eggs. A "meh" episode, if my memory serves me correctly.
