Sex in games? Never!
Source: Hellgate: London - The Unofficial SiteThe picture to your right is an image of the female Templar character from Flagship Studios' upcoming game Hellgate: London, as she appeared in a mid-2005 issue of Playboy. Savour the image - in the gaming world, such sights are a rarity.
For some reason, despite featuring all manner of violent explosions, carnage and dismemberment, the computer games industry has always seemed to shy away from depictions of sex and nudity, placing it light years behind its close cousin, the film industry. The most recent scandal in the games business was the discovery that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas contained a secret mini-game filled with sexy antics, which led to several lawsuits being filed against publisher Take Two. To say that this attitude towards games is puritanical would be the understatement of the year. The notion that legal action should be taken for the inclusion of sexual content in a game that already has a "Mature" (ages 17 and over) rating is ludicrious.
Anyway, where I'm going with this is that, yesterday, there was a summit in San Francisco to discuss how more sex can be got into games.
"The perception is video games are for kids," said Brenda Brathwaite, a veteran game designer and the conference organizer. "But people have a right to do this. Don't tell me I have to abide by this little Disney-esque palette. I may never even use the hard-core end of the palette in any game I make. But don't tell me I can't do that."
The article is pretty interesting, and well worth checking out. Read the full story at MTV News.
