Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 4, Episode 2: Living Conditions

DVDWritten by Marti Noxon; Directed by David Grossman

I want to like this episode, which is sort of funny, but in a really cheesy way that brings out the worst elements of the show - namely extremely hokey demons and the annoyingness of the Buffy character. It has a slightly lame, sitcom-esque feel to its situations, most of which simply don't feel like typical Buffy humour. Some nice moments aside - the constant repetition of the Cher song, a one-on-one conversation between Buffy and Oz, which, to the best of my knowledge had actually never happened before - it feels a bit desperate, going for some really obvious jokes that don't really work. To be brutally honest, I felt slightly embarrassed to be watching it. Still, at least it's not Where the Wild Things Are.

Overall rating: 5/10.

Next time: The Harsh Light of Day.
