2046 ***½

China: Wong Kar Wai, 2004

Beautiful and atmosphere-drenched but overly bloated romance with a bit of science fiction thrown in for good measure, 2046 is more about establishing a specific mood than about telling a coherent story. Indeed, the mood works extremely well, thanks mainly to the music and Christopher Doyle's photography, but at over two hours in length, it does drag, especially towards the end.

The Others ****

USA/Spain: Alejandro Amenábar, 2001

Brilliant supernatural horror with a wonderful atmosphere, stunning photography and a great performance by Nicole Kidman. Only the rather hammy performances of the two actors playing the children let this great movie down. Add to that a fantastic twist ending which I must say I never saw coming.

Saw **½

USA: James Wan, 2004

Inconsistent and at times clumsy piece of horror, filled with bad acting, bad camerawork and awful MTV-style editing, this movie has garnered a lot of attention and praise, but in my opinion it is unfounded. Even more bafflingly, some have claimed that it is reminiscent of Dario Argento's earlier work, a comparison that would be insulting if it wasn't so ludicrous. If you want a good modern horror movie, go watch Haute Tension. Saw has its moments, but they are few and far between and the end result is about as generic as they come.

Movies

Welcome to the movie checklist!

This section is an archive listing every movie I've seen from January 1 2005 onwards. Films I have already seen are included and will be marked with a (*), but probably won't be reviewed except under special circumstances. I will be including a rating for each film (in stars, out of 5), and hope to be able to include a brief 1-2 paragraph review of each film, although due to time constraints that won't always be possible.
