Naked Beach Frenzy

The cartoon

Naked Beach Frenzy is not going to alter your life. It contains no hidden subtleties that will make you think or require repeat viewings to catch. In that sense, it is a pretty one-dimensional show. It is, however, very entertaining, and has a kind of innocent sauciness to it that, in my mind, is streets ahead of the poo jokes in Fire Dogs 2 or Ren's "Who's the pitcher, who's the catcher?" rant in Onward and Upward. Instead, we have Ren on the beach lusting after naked and semi-naked girls, while poor Stimpy gets very jealous of the fact that Ren prefers their thongs to his. What makes this doubly enjoyable is the fact that the poor unsuspecting females are completely oblivious to the power that their formidable assets have over Ren. They simply want to frolic on the beach in their birthday suits, while Ren... well, I'm sure you get the picture.

Visually, this cartoon is nothing special. Some of the animation comes across as a bit ropey, and Ren and Stimpy don't pull any particularly interesting facial expressions - it seems that the real attention was given to the various curvaceous females (and those are some fine curvaceous females!). This isn't necessarily a massive problem, although the production values show all the signs of this being a "B" feature (admittedly, the fact that the copy John K. sent was derived from a 2nd generation NTSC VHS didn't help).

Again, the length of the cartoon seems problematic. It's too light-hearted in nature and not ambitious enough to justify the 22-minute running time, and yet I doubt that John K. and co would have been able to cram everything they wanted to do into a standard 11-minute length. I can't help thinking that a far better format for these shows would have been to do a 15-16 minute feature cartoon and bookend it with a couple of bumpers. Still, now that the series is in the can there doesn't seem much point in engaging in "what ifs". Naked Beach Frenzy is a fun gag cartoon, and of the six episodes it is arguably the one that comes closest to living up to the "Party" in Adult Party Cartoon.

Standout moment: "Did that bad man pinch you up?" "Just put me down, Stimpy."
