I suspect that the UK release is simply a blow-up to PAL resolution of the US master. It looks softer and has noticeably more compression artefacts. There's not really much to be said on this subject: the US version is the one to go for in terms of visuals, and in all other areas the two are equal (they have different language and subtitle options, but that's neither here nor there if you're an English speaker).
Note that, at the time of release, a special Gift Set edition was available in the US, featuring 7 framed character portraits, a companion book and cericel. If you are a fan of the film, this is probably worth tracking down.
