I'm in awe of this film's visuals - I could stare at the screen captures for hours. In these screenshots, the US release might appear superficially sharper, but this is misleading as the increased "detail" in fact comes from edge enhancement, which becomes quite clear in playback. The UK shots, meanwhile, might look a little soft in comparison, but when played, this transfer has a very smooth appearance to it which, by all accounts, is an accurate representation of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's intentions.
The UK release gains a DTS track, but it's not particularly worthwhile. In fact, it is noticeably quieter than its Dolby counterpart (the opposite is usually the case), and I can't hear any improvements in the channel separation or mix.
Although the names are sometimes different, the US release actually has all the same extras as the UK version, plus a few more of its own. The big draw, if you can understand French, is that it includes the French version of Jeunet's audio commentary (in addition to the English variant found on the UK disc), although bear in mind that it is not subtitled.
