Comments

Ugh! It's not often that you compare a LaserDisc to a DVD and the LaserDisc comes out on top. But that's what happens here... just. Both transfers have their problems, with the master used for the LD being poorly DVNR'd (something tells me Fox just wanted to get this title out the back door quickly), while the DVD comes from a piss-poor composite source and has NR of a different type, causing outlines to ghost rather than to disappear. The DVD also looks like it was photographed through a layer of excrement, while the LD's colours seem to correspond with the version I saw in the cinema (although, admittedly, thinking back to 1994 it's difficult to recall precisely how it looked), albeit somewhat desaturated. I've added a capture of the redub trailer from the German disc (see Example 1), which gives you some idea of how it might have looked had a half-decent master been used.

Asterix Conquers America was shot in English and then dubbed into several different languages, so the French version is immediately at a disadvantage, given that it only features French audio. However, I am of the opinion that the French dub is better than the English original, since it doesn't feature the rancid tones of Craig Charles and his compatriots.

I'm not going to give out ratings for this, since neither version is particularly good and it's not really fair to rate an LD in DVD terms.
