The new Limited Edition marks a vast improvement in all areas when compared to the previous release. The old version had a PAL-to-NTSC standards-converted transfer and suffered from severely overdone contrasts, and what looks like colour manipulation as well. This film is obviously meant to be colourful, but a number of scenes, especially those in the green forest, border on excessive in the old transfer. The new transfer, while far from perfect (there are some noticeable compression artefacts during the echo game sequence), is very serviceable indeed and is excellent given EDKO's rather poor track record.
Sound may not bother you too much, but the new edition again marks an improvement. The standard DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 mixes have been replaced with DD 5.1EX and DTS-ES 6.1 versions, and a Cantonese dub is also included for the curious. Both releases have identical subtitles. They could be better (they appear partially on the image and partially on the letterboxing, which is sure to annoy users with projectors who prefer to mask the letterboxing) but at least they're accurate and legible.
Extras: nothing to say here really. The new edition is an obvious improvement, even if you don't want to pick up the deluxe Limited Edition box set, which includes a number of very nice goodies. (The score given to the Extras reflects the normal 2-disc Special Edition rather than the Limited Edition box.)
