The US transfer is noticeably more vertically edge enhanced than the Italian version, although this is not necessarily noticeable in static screenshots. The enlarged (300%) image above should give a better idea of how much nicer the Italian transfer looks. There is also quite a bit more detail present in the Italian version (again, not so noticeable in these shots) - although this is probably mainly to do with the extra <100 lines afforded by the PAL format. Both have some noticeable compression problems, although the Italian disc seems to have slightly more (not in every single example, though) - possibly because of the additional detail. The sharper image balances this out, though. Overall I would consider these two transfers about equal.

In terms of extras, it's fairly obvious that the Italian set is the winner. Hopefully, though, when the US version of the special edition is released next year, those trapped in R1-only land will be able to appreciate the excellent bonus materials included in the Italian set.
