I'm calling this one a draw. There are visible differences: the UK version seems to show slightly more detail, barring the opening credits, which are softer; it's also slightly sharper and has slightly warmer colours; but the fact that the grain is maintained better on the US release seems to balance things out in the long run. Ultimately I don't think one is necessarily any better than the other. The US disc has a DTS track, which is absent from its UK counterpart, but as the original mono audio is nowhere to be found I'm awarding both an automatic 0/10 in the sonic department: many of the sound effects in the 5.1 mix provided here are completely different from those in the original mix, so as far as I'm concerned this is not the original version of the film.
The same extras are to be found on both versions, although on the UK release everything barring the commentary is housed on a separate disc. The UK version actually uses slightly different names for the extras than the US version, but to make the comparison clearer I've decided to use the same names for both releases.
